Flatworm parasites of the genus Schistosoma spp. (italicized) rely on a specific snail intermediate host to develop to the human infective stage (cercaria) that causes schistosomiasis. My research in the Adema Lab focuses in gaining greater understanding of the biology of one of the major intermediate hosts in South America, the snail Biomphalaria glabrata (italicized), with hopes that it will give insight to develop alternative methods of snail control to truncate the parasite's life cycle.
